Culler Lake in Baker Park was created out of a smaller body of water known as Kidwiler Pond. In the days before widespread use of electric refrigeration, large chunks of ice were cut out of the pond during winter months and sold for use in local homes and businesses.

Stephen English playfully calls his address at Citizens Nursing Home in Frederick “Shangri-La,” but he’s only half joking.
“The staff is fantastic, they’re magnificent, like a bunch of gurus,” says English, who enjoys painting in one of Citizens’ activity rooms. “I want to be an artist and Citizens has encouraged me along those lines.”
He’s not alone. Be they living in elder-care facilities like Citizens, at home by themselves or with relatives, the county’s senior population is booming. In fact, Frederick County’s older adult population is the fourth fastest growing in Maryland, behind only Calvert, Charles and Howard counties, according to the Frederick County Department of Aging.
