I think some of my friends are hitting that point in their lives where they think “go big or go home.” And they are certainly not going home.
I’ve really enjoyed hearing about the bold moves people are making. Of course, when I say bold, I understand “bold” is really subjective. You’re talking to a very conservative, cautious gal here. I thought I was living on the edge when I had a very small neon pink hair extension crimped into my hair for a week a couple of years back. (Crazy, right?)
Friends in their late 30s to early 40s are making major career changes. Some are making major lifestyle changes. One friend is moving about as far across the country as possible – from Alaska to New England – without having a job there first. Talk about courage!
When I hear about these moves, I often wonder, “could I do that?” Usually the answer is no. Not because what they are doing is bad in any way – I just don’t know that I could do it. I made a bold move 17 years ago when I moved to Maryland without knowing a soul here. It’s not easy, and believe it or not, I can be very shy and reserved. Overall, I’m not one for bold moves.
Oh, I most certainly contemplate bold moves. Then I question them. And question some more. Then analyze. Then drill down. Then analyze more. Question, analyze, drill … months could pass before I decide I can’t do it. It’s almost like I’m talking myself out of it. Maybe now that I’m the big 4-0, I will drum up the courage to do something bold. Tell you what … I’ll think about it.
However, I certainly admire those who can be bold. I think it makes the world a better, more interesting place.
