What better way to celebrate the end of another school year than with this image (c. 1945), which depicts Parkway Elementary students bursting with excitement as they begin a new summer. Miss Mary Smith, principal of the school from 1940-1966, waves them goodbye.

By the end of the 19th century, the large number of one-room schoolhouses in the state of Maryland had become increasingly problematic. In an effort to consolidate the number of schools taught by one teacher and to promote education in an agricultural community, Parkway Elementary School was built in 1929. Between 1920 and the school’s opening 10 years later, the number of schools in Frederick County had gone from 111 to just 24. At its dedication on Oct. 30, 1930, with 400 people in attendance, a State Board of Education member declared Parkway Elementary “a monument to an equal chance for everyone.”
