One type of store that downtown Frederick has been lacking for quite some time is a bookstore. It’s true that several shops downtown carry books (Dancing Bear Toys & Gifts has an excellent selection of children’s books, for instance). But Frederick’s main streets have been lacking a true downtown bookshop like the ones seen in many cities, filled with books old and new. That is, until this month.
On May 5, The Reading Crease held its grand opening ceremonies at its location in downtown Frederick. The small shop is located at 107 S. Market St., just a few doors down from the corner of All Saints Street. Next door is a cobbler’s shop and two doors down sits Neutre, an Aveda beauty salon. The south end of the city has been seeing a resurgence of late, and The Reading Crease will surely help bring more shoppers there.
The Reading Crease sells books both new and used, as well as magazines and other related items for children and adults. The shop is quite small, but the décor and calming blue walls make shoppers feel at home as soon as they walk through the doors.
Beautiful wooden shelves are already stocked with books. Several copies of the infamous “Fifty Shades of Grey” series were available, and a few shelves away, readers will find several copies of books in “The Hunger Games” series as well. A wide variety of fiction and nonfiction is available. You will literally find everything from novels by Nora Roberts to “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “The Magic Treehouse” series for young children.
The Reading Crease has already played host to a book-signing event, and plans to do more. Summer reading clubs are also in the works. For now, the latest news about the shop can be found almost daily on its Facebook page (www.facebook.com/thereadingcrease). There you can also order books and make suggestions.
Frederick’s avid readers can sign up online to receive news of upcoming events, and watch as the shop expands its offerings in the coming months.
