Specialty store Lebherz Oil and Vinegar Emporium in downtown Frederick carries olive oils and vinegars, ranging from traditional to exotic to organic.
Love has spurred man on to achieve great feats, and it was love of food and the Spanish lifestyle that spurred Maggie Lebherz on to venture into the world of small business. In June, Maggie opened Lebherz Oil and Vinegar Emporium—abbreviated L.O.V.E.—in downtown Frederick.
As a college senior, Maggie studied at the University of Salamanca in Spain and became immersed in the culture, attending classes as any student would do and shopping for groceries as locals do. “It’s different there,” she explains. “If you want bread, you go to the bakery. If you want oil, you go to the oil store. Ingredients are fresh and quality. Food is a part of the culture.”
Maggie developed a new appreciation for food, which came with her when she returned home. Maggie’s mother, Mary Beth, who helps out at L.O.V.E., jokes: “She came home, looked at me and said, ‘Where’s the oil?’”
Maggie laughingly admits, “I got spoiled!”
Lebherz Oil and Vinegar Emporium carries olive oils and vinegars, ranging from traditional to exotic to organic. Oils and vinegars are stored in stainless steel Italian pots called fusti, which have a small spout for tastings to be drawn and sampled. Bread cubes, toothpicks and tiny cups are provided for shoppers to taste test.
But here’s the challenge: L.O.V.E. carries 43 flavors of olive oil and vinegar!
Their Traditional Balsamic Vinegar has been cask aged 18 years. L.O.V.E.’s best sellers are Strawberry Balsamic and Dark Chocolate Balsamic Vinegars. The store also carries white balsamic vinegars. “Drizzle chocolate balsamic over ice cream—you’ll never miss the fat,” recommends Maggie. “Splash fruit with Cinnamon Pear Balsamic. Use Honey Ginger White Balsamic for Asian cooking.”
Her ideas are endless.
L.O.V.E.’s traditional olive oils are imported from across the globe including Italy, Greece, California and Chile, and they are the perfect staple in a cook’s pantry.
