A small but powerful group, The Frederick Giving Project, is at it again. Now in year two, they are getting ready to award their second grant to a local not-for-profit. This year they have narrowed it down to five potential grantees.

The FGP is a community of young philanthropist who not only donate money, but also time and talent. Built into their giving model is an opportunity to socialize, learn and feel good about giving back.

At a recent meeting/social event held at Moxie Bakery and Café, Janet McCurdy, Frederick County Community Foundation Board of Trustee, spoke to the group about their Human Needs Assessment Report that was released recently by the Community Foundation. The report, conducted by the Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance, covered all areas of human services in our community, but focused in particular on health, youth issues, and basic human needs.

The FGP will use the information that they obtained at last night meeting in their decision making for this year’s grant. Each member of the FGP is given one vote per his or her membership.  “It’s a very democratic process,” stated Rebecca Southers, co-founder and “Empress” of the group. This year the group received 22 grant applications.

Last year’s grant recipient, Cakes For Cause, was pleased to host the group for dinner, and has enjoyed working with the group over the past year. Owner Elin Ross stated, “They are an energetic and creative group of young philanthropists who represent a new vision for giving.” Ross a believer herself in giving back donated part of last night’s proceeds from the dinner back to the group.
