Where's the Best Place to Work in Frederick County?

CELAL TEBER

CELAL TEBER

For the ninth straight year, Frederick County is participating in the Best Places to Work campaign. So, if you love your employer, or you're proud of the company you run, now's the time to show it!

Through sponsorship by Frederick County Office of Economic Development, City of Frederick Department of Economic Development, Frederick County Workforce Services and the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, Frederick County residents have the ability to take a 15-minute survey, which will ultimately yield results that directly translate to the Best Places to Work in Frederick County.

In 2010, the Family Friendly Business/Best Places to Work campaign winners included such beloved Frederick companies as AOPA – Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, DMS – Data Management Services, Frederick Memorial Healthcare Systems, SAIC-Frederick and U.S. Army Garrison Fort Detrick. Who will it be this year?

The Best Places to Work campaign has all bases covered. If your employer is nationwide, or if the business you own is really small, it doesn't matter. The Best Places to Work campaign has broken the winners into four categories: Small Employer (1-10 employees), Medium Employer (11-50), Large Employer (51-200) and Major Employer (200+).

You may be wondering, does my employer qualify to be added? Here's what they're looking for:

  • Corporations
  • Privately owned businesses
  • Non-profit associations
  • Federal, state and local government agencies (that meet Family Friendly criteria)

But really, the focus isn't on company size; rather, the Best Places to Work campaign narrows in on things such as flexible schedules to help balance home and work lives, corporate gym access, professional development programs, and a general focus on well-being – all common among winners from year's past.

However, before you go rushing with excitement to fill out the survey, make sure you know the following information ahead of time so you're super efficient and don't waste any time. Because, let's face it. We're all ridiculously busy, right? Okay, here's what you need to know:

  • Name, title & phone number of top-ranking official (if it's not you)
  • A brief (100 words or less) description of your company/organization
  • Company/organization size
  • Why is your company one of Frederick County's “Best Places to Work”? (200 words or less)
  • Total number of full time, part time and contractual employees
  • Voluntary 2010 turnover rate
  • Median annual salary based on the company/organization's W-2 information
  • All benefits offered to employees
  • Information regarding the types of time off employees receive
  • Types of training and tuition reimbursement (if any)
  • How does the company/organization encourage employees to give back to the community
  • Methods and strategies for keeping up employee morale
  • Types of diversity and inclusion programs

If you'd like to participate, the survey needs to be completed no later than Sept. 16. Then, be on the lookout for an announcement for the Awards Ceremony scheduled for Oct. 18, at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center. A winner will be chosen for each company size category, and then featured in a local publication, followed by being entered into the Chamber's Summit Awards.
